Michelle Tocher
Guide to Mythic Imagination
Michelle Tocher is a mythic writer, teacher, and pioneer of the WonderLit™ Method. Her core work centers on helping people access personal healing and transformation through imagination and engagement with fairy tales.
Living with chronic pain, Michelle discovered fairy tales not as escapism but as soul mirrors that help people find meaning in their deepest wounds.
Her work is sensitive, profound, non-dogmatic, and guided by metaphor, story and intuitive discovery.
Michelle believes in creating safe spaces where others can explore their inner landscapes.
Purpose-inspired Work
Michelle’s mission is to revive the light of wonder in our stories and our lives.
Through storytelling, she awakens others to the inner light of their imagination, helping people to make meaning from suffering, discover their personal radiance, and move toward healing and wholeness.
Michelle believes that we have the power to change the world from the inside out because good stories break spells.
Michelle’s Professional Evolution
Michelle’s career began in wonder. As a student of literature and history, she wanted to understand how science and spirituality had grown apart. Her master’s thesis explored Darwin and Wallace, two thinkers who both conceived natural selection but held very different worldviews. Her curiosity led her into journalism and communications, where she searched for the deeper human stories — the ones about how we adapt, respond, and make sense of change.
She came to see that we “live in a sea of stories” and that the myths we carry shape how we see ourselves and the world. Good stories, she discovered, can “break spells” and shift perspective, illuminate hidden truths, and free us from the stories we’ve inherited. Through storytelling and teaching, Michelle helps others recognize that every life is a fascinating story, and that our common ground is first and foremost our shared state of humanity.
How Michelle Realized the WonderLit™ Method
WonderLit™ grew out of Michelle’s experience as a storyteller and her fascination with the rich imagery and wisdom of fairy tales. When, in the early 1990s, she was diagnosed with chronic pain that could not be treated, she turned to the fairy tales that she told. Passed down for generations by women who knew how to meet mortality and endure suffering, Michelle discovered that the stories could be encountered in a profoundly imaginative way. Through her interaction with these “fate tales” as she calls them, she discovered a way to follow the stories to acceptance, hope and resilience.
Her method invites others to do the same: step into a story, follow it, and make it your own. When we use our imaginations to look between the lines of a myth, scenes become a mirror of the soul, enabling seekers to engage with their personal fate, challenge the stories that are hurtful, and reclaim their more essential identity and nature. Through her own difficulties she has learned that when we grapple with the myths we live by, we can meet our circumstances with greater insight, courage, and joy.
